Chun Hwang, Academic Pathway Advisor

Email: chwang@highline.edu

Hello! My name is Chun Hwang and I’m super excited to be at Highline! I have a Bachelor’s in Sociology from the University of Washington and I was previously the Program Coordinator for the Career and Advising Center at Green River College.

My advising philosophy comes from wanting everyone to have an equal opportunity. I want education to be something that is accessible for everyone no matter what their difficulties may be. Having gone through difficult times at the UW, I understand the struggles of attempting to go through college with no assistance. As an advisor, I want to be the support that students can feel comfortable coming to when they need help.

I like Blackpink, playing Pokemon Go, eating good food, watching sitcoms, and I hate mushrooms.

Hello there!

My name is Jan Patrick Campanano and I am super excited to be on the team as an Academic Pathway Advisor! I graduated at the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s degree in communication in the Spring of 2018. Since then, I have gone on to work various roles in college and career readiness, ranging from being an AmeriCorps coach at my old high school assisting seniors with their postsecondary aspirations, to continuing a similar line of work as an advisor for Upward Bound at Evergreen State College during the pandemic.

As an Academic Pathway Advisor, I’m looking forward to assist students in a more direct college capacity. My philosophy for advising and helping students stems from this quote: “you know, I don’t any dreams. But I can still protect them.” As someone who has always doubted and questioned his place in the world, I want to be able to help students find their own path, and in doing so, be able to help them find a place they can call home.

In my spare time, I love to watch, read, and discuss all things anime and manga, I am an avid trading card game collector/player, and I am a budding chess player!

If anyone would like to drop in and say hi, you can always find me at the Advising Center at Building 6, Room 159!

Maria Reyes, Academic Pathway Advisor

Email: mreyes@highline.edu

Hi there! My name is Maria Reyes (she/hers).

I am a proud Filipina-American and a first-generation college graduate from the community college system. I earned my Associate in Business DTA and transferred to the University of Washington (Seattle) where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. After graduation, I made the leap of faith decision to work and live in rural Japan. With the JET Program, I taught English to Japanese students and eventually served as an advisor in supporting expatriates in navigating work and life abroad. After five years abroad, I returned to Washington where I work, and earned my Masters in Education at Seattle University. Since October 2023, I have served as an Academic Advisor with Pathway Advising.

I empathically center my philosophy on honoring students’ lived experiences and providing them with the necessary means to help achieve their goals. I invite students to come in as they are as we take-on a collaborative learning approach in navigating Highline College.

My hobbies/interests include the following: Tea Appreciation, Barre Workouts, Jigsaw Puzzles, Video Games, Anime, Audiobooks/Podcasts.

Paul Sam, Program Assistant

Email: psam@highline.edu

My name is Paul Lupe Sam. As a former Highline College International Student, I am super excited to be back and to show up for students the same way Highline staff showed up for me. I speak two and a half languages; English, Kiswahili and Arabic (South Sudanese dialect). I recently graduated from Highline College with a Bachelors in Youth Development and currently work full time as a Program Assistant at Highline College’s Advising Center. As a Program Assistant for the Advising Center, I’m the primary point of contact for current students seeking general academic advising. Seeing students succeed and achieve their goals is my favorite part of the job because I understand the struggle. In my free time, I love to read and write poetry, binge watch tv shows, and listen to music.
